Mission and objectives

The Republic of Ghana is located centrally on West Africa's southern coastal bulge. It is the first colonial territory to gain independence in 1957, under the leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The population is estimated at about 18.5 million.

International Council of Museums Ghana National Committee

The Ghana National Committee of the International Council of Museum, ICOM Ghana is an organization of museums and museum professionals of Ghana. The members join the International Council of Museum through the National Committee of their country of citizenship. Each member may join an International Committee that correspond to his/her interests.

According to the records from the ICOM documentation centre in Paris, membership from Ghana dates as far back as 1964. The Chairpersons/Presidents of ICOM-Ghana National Committee from 1980’s to the present are listed below:

  • Mr. E.A. Asante (1980's -1991)
  • Dr. I. N. Debrah (1991-1998)
  • Mr. Kwame Sarpong (2005- )

The Mission of ICOM-Ghana National Committee is:

  • to recruit members and communicate information regarding the role of ICOM and ICOM Ghana;
  • to encourage Ghana museums in their effort to respond to the challenges and needs of the museum profession in our country;
  • to inform the international public on Ghanaian Museums.

Objectives of ICOM-Ghana National Committee

  • develop and maintain a web site to keep its members informed and to inform the general public on Ghanaian museums;
  • collaborate with other museums in Africa and internationally in the exchange of information and services to increase professional standards;
  • inform members of training programs for museum curators, technicians, educators, conservators;
  • encourage institutional members to promote Ghanaian museums' role in the Ghanaian society as guardian of cultural and natural heritage and as a major contributor to children's education;
  • encourage the participation of Ghanaian museums in the study, protection, promotion of our intangible cultural heritage and traditional knowledge and in any initiative that will lead to its recognition by international organizations;
  • promote cooperation, mutual aid and information exchange among its members, in particular to:
    1. support and promote ICOM goals and projects among Ghanaian museums and museum professions, and to contribute to carrying out ICOM programs;
    2. seek out new ICOM members among Ghanaian museums and museum professionals;
    3. act as the primary avenue of communication between ICOM and its Ghanaian membership;
    4. manage the interests of ICOM in Ghana;
    5. represent the interest of members within the ICOM Secretariat;
    6. cooperate with ICOM's International Committees and with national and international organizations interested in museums and their related professions.
